3rd Samadhi Statue / Abayagiri Bodhigaraya iii
This is the most ancient Bodhi - Tree Shrine of the Abhayagiri monastery as reported by the Chinese monk Fa-hien, whi visited Sri Lanka in the 5th century A.D. The Buddha Statue and Vajrasana (Sacred seat) found around the Bodhi Tree and the remains of four construction phases from the 1st century B.C are visible here. The Bodhi Tree planted here was from a seedling of the Sri Maha Bodhiya in India.
The entrace porch to the Bodhi Tree Shrine was restored by Mr.S.M.Burrows and was named after him as "Burrows Pavilion". The two stone inscriptions found in its vicinity could be attributed to King Mahinda iv (956-972A.C) and King Kassapa V (914-923A.C). The rules and regulations with regard to the administration of the Abhayagiriya Monastery are inscribed on them.
