Sigiriya - Bodhi Tree Shrine
The Bodhigaraya constructed in Sigiriya premises is an important monument belonging to the monastery complex, a building erected for the Bodhi tree during the second monastic phase after king Kasyapa. The basic plan of this Bodhigara (Bodhi Tree Shrine) consists of a circular outer stone wall, a brick-built platform in the centre, and a square pit of stone slabs for the Bodhi tree.
The main entrance faces north. At the base of the flight of steps to the right could be seen a "Padoniya" where water was stored to wash the feet. Two periods of construction could be identified in this instance. The circular stone wall and the limestone remaining on the square platform belong to the first phase. The brick pacing in the centre platform and the polished stone slabs on the square pit belong to the second phase.
